Volunteer Opportunities in Peoria

At OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center and other OSF HealthCare locations across the Peoria area, student volunteers play an important role during the summer. These volunteer opportunities are designed for high school and college students who want to gain experience in a supportive hospital environment.

Please note:

• These opportunities take place during the summer months at OSF Saint Francis and nearby OSF locations in Peoria.
• We do not coordinate job shadowing, physician shadowing or research opportunities.
• Opportunities are geared toward high school and college students seeking structured volunteer experiences.

Patient Services Team

As part of the patient services team, you’ll help make a patient’s hospital stay more comfortable by offering friendly, personal support. This role allows you to give your time in an unhurried, meaningful way while helping reduce the workload of nursing staff.

Tasks may include:

• Delivering trays or water
• Providing warm blankets
• Caring for flowers and plants
• Answering phones
• Reading at a patient’s bedside
• Stocking supplies and light cleaning

This role is ideal for someone who is a self-starter, enjoys meeting new people and communicates well with a diverse population. No direct patient care is required.

Greeter and Escort Team

As a greeter and escort volunteer, you create a welcoming first impression for patients and visitors at OSF Saint Francis. You’ll guide individuals to their destinations and help make their visit as smooth as possible.

Responsibilities may include:

• Greeting patients and visitors
• Providing directions and answering questions
• Escorting patients by walking or wheelchair
• Assisting with patient discharge to parking areas

This role requires the ability to walk long distances, push a wheelchair and remain courteous and helpful at all times.

Clerical Support Team

Clerical support volunteers help departments stay organized and efficient by assisting with administrative tasks. This opportunity offers valuable experience in a professional office setting within a hospital.

Responsibilities may include:

• Answering phones
• Sorting and filing records
• Assembling packets
• Copying documents
• Updating bulletin boards
• Entering data

This role is best suited for someone who is detail oriented, professional and eager to learn.

Requirements for Student Volunteers

To participate in our student volunteer program in Peoria, you will need to meet the following requirements:

• Have a desire to serve others
• Be in good physical and mental health
• Be at least 16 years old as of May 30
• Currently attending high school, college or working on a GED
• Provide proof of Tdap vaccination received within the last 10 years and the flu shot during flu season. If there is no documentation, OSF will provide these vaccinations. OSF will also provide TB testing and lab titers for MMR, varicella and hepatitis B.
• Agree to remain a volunteer from May 30-July 31
• Agree to volunteer a minimum of eight weeks out of the nine-week program
• Agree to volunteer one day per week (same day, time and area) for duration of program
• Able to volunteer in three-to-four-hour shifts
• Complete an online orientation
• Follow all policies and regulations at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center

Interviews will be conducted in March and April. Students will receive their assignment at time of interview and will be given on a first come, first served basis.
