X-Ray
OSF Saint Francis relies on licensed Radiologic Technologists to perform general X-rays, including chest, extremity, lower back, neck and more. Our advanced computerized radiology system is completely digital, so our radiologists can receive the X-rays quickly via computer. With our digital system, the patient is exposed to less radiation.
What is an X-ray?
An x-ray is an exam that results in images of internal body structures. X-rays use small amounts of ionizing radiation to produce what appears as an internal snapshot.
How to prepare for your X-ray
- Most X-rays are quick and usually involve little preparation.
- During your visit, you may be asked to change into a gown, depending on the body part being X-rayed.
- Certain X-ray exams require the use of contrast agents, which can be swallowed, injected or administered via enema.
- During your X-ray exams, you may be asked to hold your breath and remain very still while a quick exposure is made.
- Most X-ray exams last between 10 and 30 minutes
- Pregnancy tests are required for females ages 10 through 55. Please be prepared to provide a urine sample upon your arrival at the testing facility. Your physician’s office should order this test.
Getting your results
In most cases, your imaging exam will be interpreted within 24 hours. Please keep in mind that your doctor’s office may need additional time to incorporate the report into your personal medical record.
