The pediatric hospitalist team provides 24/7 support to referring physicians, patients and families.

What is a pediatric hospitalist?

A pediatric hospitalist is a pediatrician who specializes in caring for hospitalized babies, children and adolescents.

What does a pediatric hospitalist do?

Sometimes referred to as the attending physician, pediatric hospitalists supervise and coordinate all areas of care during a child’s hospital stay, often working with interns and resident physicians. They diagnose and treat a wide range of pediatric illnesses and medical needs.

Pediatric Intensivist

The pediatric critical care team provides 24/7 in-house (at the hospital) care of critically ill children, including those requiring life support, those recovering from major surgeries or simply those requiring a high level of monitoring.

What is a pediatric intensivist?

A pediatric intensivist is a pediatrician who has completed additional training in managing critically ill babies, children and adolescents. Pediatric intensivists are responsible for managing children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Residents, Physicians and Other Medical Students

Because OSF Children’s Hospital is a teaching hospital, your child’s care team has extra support from students and physicians who are getting additional training in pediatrics.

Medical Students

A medical student is in their third or fourth year of medical school and is part of the medical team. They are learning about pediatrics.

Advanced Practice Provider

These providers have advanced degrees and assist the physicians on your child’s care team.

Residents

A resident is a physician with a medical degree who is receiving additional training in pediatrics.

Interns

An intern is a pediatric resident in their first year of training. Under the supervision of the senior resident and attending physician, the intern is responsible for the day-to-day care of your child. You will see this physician the most.

Senior Residents

A senior resident is a physician in their final years of pediatric training. They are responsible for knowing about every child under their team’s care, supervising the interns and updating the pediatric hospitalist.

Fellows

A fellow is a physician who has completed their residency and is pursuing additional training to become a pediatric subspecialist. They are responsible, with oversight from the supervising attending physicians, for knowing every child on their team, implementing care plans and leading the team caring for your child.

Pediatric Specialists

Depending on your child’s condition, there may be other physicians involved in their care. They will collaborate with the rest of the care team to offer recommendations and will be closely involved in your child’s care.

Pediatric Surgeons

Our pediatric surgeons provide surgical treatment for all childhood diseases. They know how to help ease the stress of surgical procedures for kids and are all board certified and fellowship trained with over 114 years of experience.

Pediatric Anesthesiologists

Our board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists provide general anesthesia, epidurals and support for surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
